2019 Toronto History Lecture

The ninth annual Toronto History Lecture will take place on Wednesday 7 August 2019 at the City of Toronto Archives.

Author and scholar Michael Peterman will introduce us to an engaging and versatile Irishman who was the talk of the town in the mid-19th century. James McCarroll challenged the prejudices of Torontonians while entertaining them with his poetry, music and humour. He was a pop culture hit in his day, yet he has been largely written out of the historical record. Find out why in Kicking the Cultural Traces: James McCarroll in Pre-Confederation Toronto.

Copies of Professor Peterman’s new biography, Delicious Mirth: The Life and Times of James McCarroll, will be available for purchase at the lecture.

The THL was inaugurated in 2011 in memory of well-known local and family historian Paul McGrath and his love for telling people about Toronto and its past. It is free to attend but registration is required and space is limited—reserve your spot now.
